Oestrogen levels decline after the menopause and this can cause changes in our vaginal health. The walls of the vagina become thinner, which can lead to a range of uncomfortable vaginal symptoms including dryness, itching, soreness, burning and painful intercourse, also known as vaginal atrophy (VA). This affects around 1 in 2 postmenopausal women.

Gina is a small vaginal tablet that comes in a pre-loaded applicator which delivers a low dose of oestrogen directly to the vaginal wall, to treat the underlying cause of vaginal dryness. Gina is clinically proven to work by restoring your vaginal health. This is done by improving flexibility and elasticity, helping replenish moisture, and restoring vaginal tissue.
Gina works by applying a small amount of oestrogen directly to the vagina, treating the cause of vaginal dryness, to help it feel how it was before the menopause.
Gina starts to rebalance pH levels in the vagina after 2 weeks. Symptom relief can be felt after 8 weeks. Gina can continue to work as long as it is used because it replaces oestrogen. If treatment stops, oestrogen will gradually decline and symptoms may return.
Gina can be used as long as you and your pharmacist agree it's helping. You should discuss this with your pharmacist every 3 months.
Vaginal oestrogen is recommended as an effective treatment for VA by respected organisations such as NICE, the British Menopause Society and the International Menopause Society.
Although Gina contains a small dose of oestrogen, only 10 micrograms per tablet, it is the only treatment available without prescription that is clinically proven to target the cause of vaginal dryness, soreness, burning, itching and painful intercourse after the menopause.
Gina is used to treat the symptoms of vaginal dryness after the menopause in women 50 years and over, who have not had a period for at least 1 year.
There may be some people it’s not suitable for, depending on things like medical history and other medication being taken.

If you are taking Systemic HRT (oral tablets or patches), you can use Gina if you have previously been prescribed local oestrogen and your health status hasn’t changed since your last prescription – or if your GP has confirmed Gina is right for you.
If you are already using local oestrogen (vaginal tablets, gels or rings), you can use Gina if you have used vaginal oestrogen for more than 3 months, your symptoms are adequately controlled, and your health status is unchanged since your last prescription.
When starting with Gina, insert one vaginal tablet each day for the first 2 weeks of treatment. After that, it reduces to one tablet twice a week (leaving 3 or 4 days between doses).
Once you finish your first pack your pharmacist will discuss your progress with you before supplying your next pack. After that it’s important to catch up with your pharmacist every three months to ensure Gina is still the right treatment for you.
